Anthony Daniels has portrayed the graphic symbol in eleven of the twelve theatrical Star Wars films released to date, with the exception of Solo: A Star Wars Story, where the graphic symbol does not announced.[4] [a]

Despite his oblivious nature, C-3PO has played a pivotal role in the galaxy's history, actualization nether the service of Shmi Skywalker, the Lars homestead, Padmé Amidala, Bail Organa, Raymus Antilles, Luke Skywalker, Jabba the Hutt, and Leia Organa. In the majority of depictions, C-3PO's physical appearance is primarily a polished golden plating with a silverish plated correct leg (from genu articulation to ankle), although his advent varies throughout the films; including the absence of metal coverings in The Phantom Menace, a tedious copper plating in Attack of the Clones, and a red left arm in The Strength Awakens.[five] C-3PO likewise appears frequently in both catechism and Star Wars Legends continuities of novels, comic books, and video games, and was a protagonist in the animated television series Droids.

When R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) attempts to exit the transport to deliver a secret message from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), C-3PO follows him into an escape pod, which lands on the planet Tatooine. There, the droids are captured past Jawas, and are taken to be sold. In the process of being sold to Owen Lars (Phil Brown), C-3PO convinces his new possessor to buy R2-D2 as well (afterward they originally bought R5-D4 and his motivator exploded on the way back to the garage). The duo ultimately atomic number 82 Lars' nephew, Luke Skywalker (Marking Hamill), to Obi-Wan, for whom R2-D2 plays Leia's bulletin. Subsequently Majestic stormtroopers destroy the Lars homestead, C-3PO and R2-D2 proceed with Luke and Obi-Wan on a mission to rescue Leia, transported past smugglers Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) on board the Millennium Falcon. When the send is taken earnest on the Decease Star, C-3PO helps R2-D2 shut down the infinite station'southward trash compactor, saving their human being companions' lives, before escaping on lath the Falcon. When R2-D2 is damaged during the Battle of Yavin, a grief-stricken C-3PO offers to donate his ain parts to help repair his analogue. C-3PO and a repaired R2-D2 are present at the celebration of the Death Star'due south devastation at the end of the moving-picture show.

C-3PO is originally the property of the captain on the Tantive IV, but seems to follow R2-D2 in a relationship akin to those between homo children;[c] C-3PO oft following R2-D2 around, and R2-D2 needing C-3PO to interpret for him.[d] When R2-D2 is damaged in the Battle of Yavin, C-3PO offers to donate whatsoever mechanical parts helpful in his repair; but this transference is never confirmed.[e]

While exploring a room in Cloud City, C-3PO is blasted past an off-camera stormtrooper.[3] In search of C-3PO, Chewbacca heads to the Ugnaught recycling facility where he finds the dismembered parts of the droid. When Darth Vader (portrayed by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones) reveals his presence to the group that same day, Chewbacca is sent into a holding cell, but is permitted to rebuild the droid, which he does poorly.[3] Thereafter, Chewbacca carries the partially rebuilt C-3PO on his back during Han'south encasement in carbonite.

With the assist of the city's administrator, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO escape the city. Having C-3PO on Chewbacca's dorsum proves to be beneficial, in that when Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch) escapes the metropolis with a frozen Han, C-3PO notifies them of pursuing stormtroopers. While escaping Vader'southward flagship Executor, R2-D2 begins repairing C-3PO. Upon making their mode to the Rebel's rendezvous point, C-3PO is fully repaired.

C-3PO'south first translation for the crime lord is of the bounty hunter Boushh—Leia in disguise—challenge the compensation for Chewbacca equally office of her plan to rescue Han.[7] Later, Luke infiltrates the palace and kills Jabba'south rancor in a duel; whereupon Jabba transfers his court to the canvass barge with Luke, Han, and Chewbacca as food for the Sarlacc, while Leia serves as Jabba's slave. When Luke attempts escape, R2-D2 tosses him his lightsaber, with which he attacks Jabba's guards. In the midst of the boxing, C-3PO is attacked by Jabba's pet Salacious Crumb, who pulls out his right photoreceptor before existence driven off by R2-D2. Thereafter the ii escape the sheet barge and are retrieved by the protagonists.

C-3PO accompanies the strike strength to the Forest Moon of Endor to disable the shield generator protecting the 2d Death Star. When he, Han, Luke, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 are captured by the Ewoks, C-3PO is perceived to be a god by the latter. When the man prisoners are threatened by the Ewoks, Luke uses the Force to levitate the droid above the oversupply as demonstration of the supposed god's ability.[vii] Later that dark, C-3PO narrates the history of the Rebel Brotherhood's fight against the Galactic Empire to the tribe, convincing them to help the Rebels at the Battle of Endor. Subsequently the Empire's 2d Decease Star is destroyed, C-3PO joins the protagonists on Endor in jubilant the autumn of the Empire.

Backside the scenes [edit]

Anthony Daniels did non initially hold to be cast as C-3PO, but inverse his mind after reading the character's part in the script and seeing a concept painting by Ralph McQuarrie,[51] who based his early design largely on Walter Schulze-Mittendorff's Maschinenmensch from the Fritz Lang film Metropolis (1927).[52] The initial costume had to be roughened and then it would non reflect too much light.[53] Daniels tried on the full costume for the outset fourth dimension the day earlier shooting began,[54] and did not see its final appearance until beingness shown a Polaroid photograph of information technology while he wore the accommodate.[53] George Lucas originally envisioned the character as "more of a con man" with an American accent, just inverse his heed after Daniels' voice performance outshone that of thirty other actors that tested for the office.[55] [j] Mel Blanc was considered for the function, merely according to Daniels, Blanc told Lucas that Daniels was amend for the part.[56] [57]

C-3PO has been played by Daniels in 11 Star Wars films[ten] [58]—ten live activeness (every episode of the "Skywalker Saga" and one Anthology picture show) and i blithe. In The Phantom Menace, a skeletal C-3PO model was puppeteered by Michael Lynch (who was also a main model maker for all three prequel films), with Daniels providing the voice, and Lynch was removed in post-product. Daniels attempted to puppeteer the skeletal droid for Episode Two, just experienced difficulties; the boob was replaced in favor of a fully plated C-3PO.[53] A filmed scene featured Padmé outfitting C-3PO with his plating, but it was cut to meliorate the pacing.[53] From Attack of the Clones to The Rise of Skywalker, also as Rogue 1, Daniels both wore the costume and provided the voice.[53]

Daniels as well played C-3PO in the alive-activeness segments of Star Wars Holiday Special (1978),[59] and voiced the character in the animated portion.[yard] Daniels appeared as C-3PO at the 50th Academy Awards in 1978 and 88th University Awards in 2016. He also voiced C-3PO in the radio drama adaptations of the original trilogy and five Star Wars animated series: Droids (1985–86), Clone Wars (2003–05), The Clone Wars (2008–fourteen),[10] Rebels (2014–18)[threescore] and Resistance (2018–xx). He reprised his role in The Lego Movie,[60] in which C-3PO has a cameo advent with crew members of the Millennium Falcon,[61] and in the Star Wars Forces of Destiny episode "Beasts of Echo Base", in which his voice can exist heard on Leia'south comlink.[62] [l] Daniels also voiced C-3PO in Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018),[63] [m] various animated Lego Star Wars productions[65] and video games. Star Wars Galaxy of Adventures features some of C-3PO'south dialogue from the Skywalker Saga. C-3PO was featured with R2-D2, BB-8 and Chewbacca in Star Wars Blips.[66]

Daniels reprised his function of C-3PO for the Disneyland ride Star Tours,[60] co-created past George Lucas in 1987. He was videotaped while recording the dialogue, with the record serving as a reference for the Imagineers to programme an audio-animatronic C-3PO in the queue expanse. Both it and the audio-animatronic R2-D2 are the original props used in filming. Daniels also donned the costume for certain video segments played before and after the simulator ride itself, likewise portraying an electronically disguised Ewok announcer. Daniels also appeared in the C-3PO costume for various promotional materials for Star Tours, including the electronic press kit, a Disney special on Star Tours hosted by Gil Gerard, and various opening twenty-four hour period skits. When Star Tours opened a bilingual version at Disneyland Paris, Daniels re-recorded C-3PO's dialogue in French. C-3PO ends upward in the airplane pilot'southward seat of the Starspeeder thousand in the attraction'south successor, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue,[67] in which he is also played by Daniels.[53]

Daniels made several appearances as C-3PO on numerous TV shows and commercials[n], notably on a Star Wars-themed episode of The Donny and Marie Show in 1977,[68] Disneyland's 35th Anniversary and a Star Wars-themed episode of The Muppet Show in 1980.[69] Along with R2-D2, he also has a role as the graphic symbol on Sesame Street episodes 1364 and 1396.[69] [68] They also hosted several documentaries including The Making of Star Wars and Star Wars: Connections.[o]

In 1977, a photograph appeared on a Topps Star Wars trading carte in which C-3PO appeared to accept a prominent phallus. It was later withdrawn from apportionment.[53] In 2007, the official Star Wars website hypothesized that this was caused by a part of the adapt that had fallen into place just every bit the photograph was taken. Notwithstanding, in 2019 Daniels clarified that the costume had become compromised during C-3PO's oil bathroom in A New Promise; the warm liquid had caused the costume to split, leading to "an over-exposure of plastic in that region".[70] He further speculated in his 2019 autobiography that an artist had painted in the extended appendage.[53]

The robot was built for the purpose of extinguishing fires, but has similar movement abilities to the Star Wars droid by being able to climb ladders and deport hoses. Also similar to C-3PO, it tin respond to man gestures, only at a much more bones level.[71] [72]

Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Louis Vuitton, and Rodarte have created style designs inspired past C-3PO.[74] The cover photo of the Baronial 2015 outcome of GQ featured comedian Amy Schumer wearing a replica of Princess Leia'due south bikini and sucking 1 of C-3PO's fingers. Lucasfilm and Disney objected to this prototype and tweeted a public statement that it was unauthorized.[74]

In the Italian version of the original trilogy, C-3PO was named "D-3BO".[75] Anglicisms were not common in the Italian linguistic communication during the 1970s and 1980s, and the names of diverse characters were changed to be easier to pronounce and recognize for Italian speakers. Some of these changes were reverted in the dubbing of the prequel and sequel trilogies, where the original name C-3PO was used instead. Other name changes in the Italian version of the original trilogy include R2-D2, Han Solo, Leia Organa and Darth Vader, who were chosen respectively "C1-P8", "Ian Solo", "Leila Organa" and "Dart Fener" (or "Lord Fener").
